What a fantastic way to spend a Saturday afternoon when the rain is battering down outside – visiting the cosy little barn that two of my constituents, Lesley and Alan Reid of Willow & Plum Soap Co., have renovated and turned into a masterpiece.
As I entered, the amazing smells of all of the different types of soap and candles hit me. There was live music playing, trays of sausage rolls being offered to all of the visitors, and cups of warmed cider, mulled wine, and apple juice being given to those who needed warmed up on a cold autumn day.
The entrepreneurial skills shown in this business are incredible. Lesley told me that it all began as her “interest in natural skincare came from the jet lag and dry air during many years as long haul cabin crew. The long hours in the sky played havoc with my skin, making it dry and itchy… This all made me really aware of the products I was using. Soap, shower gel, shampoo, they could all claim to be skin friendly and natural, but a quick read of the ingredients said differently. So, I began to make my own products and the results were good, my skin improved and didn’t feel as dry. The relaxing Lavender bar was the first thing I made and it was a hit with family and friends. My Husband loved my business idea and got involved too.”
The soap that stood out to me the most was the Rainbow Bar. I was inspired to hear that for every bar sold, a donation would be given to LGBT Youth Scotland. LGBT Youth Scotland is the largest youth and community-based organisation for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Scotland. The charity’s mission is to: “empower lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people and the wider LGBT community so that they are embraced as full members of the Scottish family at home, school and in every community.”
This is an initiative that I hugely support as discrimination and bigotry is something that is unfortunately still prevalent within our society, and something that our LGBT community face time and time again.
We need to support initiatives such as Willow & Plum Soap Co.’s and fight the intolerance that many in society face and fear every single day.
